Just heard on NPR about how Chicago is the fastest shrinking big city mainly due to all the suburbs that are growing rapidly. The biggest surge recently to chicago has been the Mexican in the last 30 years.
They went on the talk about the changing Pilsen community with many condos springing up especially one that just got the official go ahead by changing borders or something the alderman said. He thought it would help local businesses and the community as a whole. Its the biggest condo to go up in Pilsen and it will be subsidized. So then a community member talked about how she hated that people moved to places that they would never have even visited much less lived in 10 years ago. She talked about people just moving to be close to downtown or the expressway. She sounded really bitter and understandably wants to hold on to the community they have worked so long to have, but its also empty because the fact that neighborhoods change in city isnt going to make an exception with Pilsen. Its a great neighborhood and people want to live there. If I were them, I would try to take advantage of getting there money in business (food, coffee, bread, sweet pasteries) than complaining of their intrusion and remind them of their "intrusion" on the czech community long ago.
and just for the record I am glad the yuppie families are moving to the burbs.. fuck aurora!
